Is your home ready?

It’s that time of year when we are looking forward to longer & warmer days in anticipation of spring! We must also consider some of the not so pleasant factors that come with the spring thaw. After this winter's unprecedented snow falls, thaws and freezes we need to be extra vigilant around our homes as the melt sets in and April showers follow. The best way to avoid a wet basement is to be proactive and prepared.

The City of Ottawa provides a comprehensive list of resources here.

Don’t wait too long before you consider getting the following done around your home this year:

  • Shovel away as much snow as you can from around the perimeter of your home making sure there are pathways for the water to flow away from your home

  • Help remove any ice and snow build up from the street catch basins near your home. You can use this handy map to locate the one near you

  • Make sure your eavestroughs and downspouts are clear and are directing water away from your home.

  • Check your window wells and ensure that snow has not built up inside of them preventing proper drainage

  • If your home has them inspect your sump pump/s to determine if they are in good working order if and it is always advisable to have a secondary pump with battery back up in place

  • If you have areas of concern or have had moisture issues before you can install moisture alarms in those areas. There are many available on the market, some that will alert you via your smart phone or simple, inexpensive versions that will sense moisture in the area they are placed and start beeping an alert. A quick search will show you the many options

Happy Spring!
